IrOx-Coated Titanium Electrodes for PEM Electrolyzers

Impact Coatings presented the latest progress in commercializing catalytic electrodes for PEM electrolyzers at the World Hydrogen Expo 2026, held in South Korea on November 4–6. The presentation highlights the advantages of titanium porous transport electrodes (PTEs) coated with iridium oxide over the conventional approach using catalyst-coated membranes.

The PVD-deposited iridium oxide has a microstructure that maximizes the catalytically active surface area, enabling high PEM electrolyzer efficiency. This microstructure also absorbs almost all incident light, giving the coating a “blacker than black” appearance.

The presentation shows that PTEs deliver comparable or better performance while using as little as one-tenth the amount of iridium compared to catalyst-coated membranes. With iridium prices rising sharply and global annual production limited, reducing iridium use is essential for the widespread deployment of PEM electrolyzer technology.

Impact Coatings is a leading supplier of coatings and production solutions for separator/bipolar plates and porous transport layers (PTLs) to PEM electrolyzer manufacturers worldwide. We are now expanding our offering to iridium oxide coatings that transform PTLs into PTEs.
