Hydrogen applications
Hydrogen is becoming a cornerstone in the transition towards a sustainable, de-carbonized future, where clean hydrogen is produced from renewable energy sources, and stored and used as a sustainable energy carrier.
Global clean hydrogen demand is projected to grow significantly in the coming decades. This means technological advancements and scalability need to meet projected demand.
Advanced PVD coatings are key factors in this fast-growing industry, by providing the needed durability and performance of core components in both hydrogen electrolyzers, and fuel cell systems.
Complex supply chains, and ongoing verification of different possible hydrogen production technologies translate to several challenges for the hydrogen industry in coming years. Risks include choosing the wrong technology, being late to adapt, or not being able to scale the chosen technology solution to commercial levels at the right pace and price.
At Impact Coatings, we have been supplying customers in the hydrogen industry with PVD coating solutions for critical components for more than a decade. Our technology allows production of the high-performing coatings needed for high energy efficiency and extended durability, especially for proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers and fuel cells.
Our delivery models are flexible to meet production needs in all development stages. We deliver quality PVD coatings from test and verification stages to pre-series, and up to mid-volume scenarios in our Coating Service Centers. Our PVD systems are the perfect choice for customers who want to scale to high-volume production in-house with equipment matched and configured for their specific application. The PVD systems can be operated by our Managed Services team, or by the customers’ own personnel. This proven service and system delivery model supports the hydrogen industry to scale up with maximum control in each production stage.
At our facilities in Sweden and China, we provide a full in-house coating service for hydrogen applications. The coating service typically supports customers during prototype and scale-up phases and is utilized by plate and stack manufacturers all over the globe.

In need of samples, verification of coating technology, or support with your next generation coating solution?
An electrolyzer produces hydrogen from water and electricity and consists of a stack of anodes and cathodes submerged in an electrolyte. The structure and build up, as well as the different electrolytes differ depending on the electrolyzer technology.
A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that uses hydrogen chemical energy to produce electricity. When hydrogen acts as the energy carrier, the only products of the process are electricity, water, and heat.
At our Coating Service Centers we have dedicated teams providing you with fast tests, technology verification, and small-to-mid volume production.
